Andrea Rodriguez has been playing and teaching trombone and other low brass for over 18 years. After receiving a Bachelor in Music Education and a Masters in Trombone from Southern Methodist University, Andrea continued her DMA studies at the University of North Texas, where she further expanded on various styles of playing. As an active pop, symphony, and salsa player in the Dallas Ft. Worth area, Ms. Rodriguez accepted a principal trombone position with the Orquesta Sinaloa de las Artes in Culiacan, Mexico and relocated there long enough to hold positions as trombone professor of the music academy at the Teatro Angela Peralta in Mazatlan, as well as maintaining the head position of the Music School located in Culiacan. After moving back to the United States, she reconvened her membership with the Las Colinas Symphony, Richardson Symphony, Longview Symphony, to name a few. Andrea also became more active as a contemporary and commercial musician, playing in several local jazz, and salsa groups, pit orchestras for musicals, and being a member of the prestigious Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Band.
Since moving to New York, Ms. Rodriguez has already enjoyed the tastes of several genres of music including brass ensembles, symphonies, salsa groups, and jazz ensembles. Throughout her career, she has been fortunate to share the stage with greats such as Arturo Sandoval, Willie Hill, Ian Bousefield, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Jimmy Sabater Jr and the NY Sabor, and many more.
WHY MUSIC?
As many kids do at an early age, I took band to avoid a lesser favored subject in school. I wasn't bad, but I wasn't winning any medals. But, I stuck with it. Years later, after scheduling classes primarily in the music building, I realized why I had become a musician: it makes me happy. From the time I was little, my mom sang German lullabies that I now incorporate in a German Children's course I teach. The lessons my first private teacher passed on were not only about music, but about how accessible and relatable music is to all aspects of life.
If you have ever found yourself humming or whistling along with the radio to your favorite tune and wondered how to replicate those melodies, better yet, create your own, I can help you do that. If you'd like to trace the influences that Wagner had on Bruckner's classical writing and it's general impact for brass players, we can learn about that as well. Let's build on that spark of interest and shape it into something even more satisfying.
I've studied intense classical repertoire en route to becoming an orchestral musician, but found my greatest entertainment lies in playing commercial music like salsa, big band, and general pop culture. My other love beside playing is teaching.
ON TEACHING
In 18 years of teaching, I've come to discover that there is no one set way to learn. Teaching is all about being able to say the same thing 100 different ways...or at least until one makes sense to the student. My interest in our lessons revolves around your goals and what you expect and hope to achieve. From there, we build a solid foundation of fundamentals to get you to your musical goal. Whether you are an advanced player already and wish to expand on repertoire and/or knowledge of different styles, or an intermediate player and want to push in a certain direction, or even a beginner to begin your musical journey, I am confident that we can steer you along the right path.
