ON TEACHING AND LEARNING
Over the last 6 years of teaching I have learned what it takes to be an effective teacher. I understand the importance of not only being able to physically play your instrument but also to understand what it is that you're playing. This way you can learn how to take what you've learned in a transcription or an etude or whatever it might be and apply it to create your own music. For example, if a student wants to learn a B.B. King solo it's not enough to be able to just play the solo with the right feel, articulation, tone, etc. The student must also understand and be able to play the blues progression, understand the form of the solo, be able to sing it, and know the scales and positions those scales are used in -- this way the student will be able to use what is learned in the solo in their own creative way.
Most people tend to be either visual learners or aural learners. The most effective way to learn is to lean on your strong side while developing the weaker. If new material is presented to a visual learner using charts, diagrams, or reading first then they will learn that material more easily. Once the student knows the material then they can learn to hear it as well. This way they will learn more effectively without getting discouraged.
People want to become musicians for many different reasons. For some people music can be therapeutic, some want to make others feel the way they feel when they hear their favorite band, and some just want to do it as a hobby. The goal with my students is to give them the tools needed to help them find what they want to express through music while having fun in the process.
